Adjusted Body Weight Calculator
This modified body weight calculator is the tool for you if you’re seeking to reduce weight in a healthy and effective way. If you’re a professional dietician, you could find it useful since it allows you to save time when estimating your patients’ needs, making your job easier, faster, and more efficient. Continue reading to discover the adjusted body weight formula and how to calculate it on your own.
What is adjusted body weight?
When dietitians are entrusted with putting up a weight loss program, they often utilize adjusted body weight (often shortened to AjBW) to calculate a person’s nutritional needs. It’s especially beneficial for those who are overweight or obese.
Because adipose tissue is less metabolically active than lean tissue, estimating one’s energy requirements using one’s actual body weight may result in some overestimations for persons who are overweight. As a result, it’s common advice to utilize AjBW instead.
How to use the adjusted body weight calculator?
To use our calculator, follow these instructions:
- Provide the calculator with your sex.
- Input your height.
- Input your actual body weight.
- The adjusted body weight calculator will calculate your optimum weight based on your gender, height, and weight, which is a component of the adjusted body weight formula. Please keep in mind that there are multiple approved formulae for estimating optimal weight, each of which is based on somewhat different scientific ideas. However, the disparities in outcomes are essentially insignificant, so you shouldn’t be concerned. The Robinson formula is used in this calculator.
- The calculator will compute your AjBW based on the data you entered and show it in the bottom-most field.
How to calculate adjusted body weight?
Of course, our calculator will complete the work swiftly and efficiently for you. Nonetheless, understanding how to calculate adjusted body weight on your own may be worthwhile – you never know when you’ll find yourself needing to give dietary advice without a device to use our calculator!
The adjusted body weight formula is used to compute AjBW:
AjBW = IBW + 0.4 * (ABW - IBW)
Where:
- AjBW is adjusted body weight,
- IBW is ideal body weight,
- ABW is actual body weight.
Ideal body weight, according to Robinson’s formula, is calculated as follows:
- for men:
52 kg + 1.9 kg per every inch over 5 feet
- for women:
49 kg + 1.7 kg per every inch over 5 feet
Calculating adjusted body weight -example
Assume we wish to calculate the dietary requirements for a man who is 180 centimeters tall and weighs 90 kilos. His optimal weight, according to the ideal weight calculation, would be 72.65 kilograms. As a result, we know:
IBW = 72.65kg
ABW = 90kg
All we need to do is input these numbers into the adjusted body weight formula:
AjBW = 72.65kg + 0.4 * (90kg - 72.65kg) = 72.65kg + 0.4 * 17.35kg = 72.65kg + 6.94kg = 79.59kg
We now know that this individual should be treated as though he weighed 79.59 kg when it comes to establishing a regular diet.
Limitations of the adjusted body weight calculator
It’s important to remember that the adjusted body weight calculator isn’t applicable in every circumstance. It should only be used if the additional weight is due to fatty tissue.
Many athletes, for example, weigh more than their look suggests, and their BMIs are potentially higher than the ideal norm. Lean muscular tissue accounts for their “extra” weight. AjBW does not apply in this circumstance. It’s also worth noting that, for such people, FFMI rather than BMI is suggested.
Another time when you shouldn’t calculate your needs based on your modified body weight is when you’re pregnant. Please use our pregnancy weight increase calculator if you’re having a kid and want to know how it will affect your weight and what a healthy diet is for you and your child.
