BMI Calculator – Body Mass Index

BMI Calculator

The BMI calculator is a helpful tool for determining if you are overweight, underweight, or at a healthy weight. A tall, slender guy may easily weigh more than a short but fat lady, so your weight alone isn’t enough to tell. The body mass index, or BMI, solves this difficulty by calculating a weight-to-height ratio and converting it to a single value. This figure will fall into one of four categories on the BMI scale: underweight, normal, overweight, and obese.

To figure out your BMI and what it implies for you on your own, you’ll need to know the following:

  • How to calculate BMI.
  • What is normal BMI.
  • What the various BMI ranges are.

How to calculate BMI

Let’s start with the calculation:

  1. Divide your weight (in kilograms) by your height (in meters).
  2. Divide the answer by your height again to get your BMI.

So the body mass index formula is as follows:

BMI = weight / height²

Normal BMI

Finding your BMI value is a piece of cake with our BMI calculator. Please keep in mind that BMI is a preliminary estimate. Individuals who are well-muscled (such as bodybuilders) or those who have lost a substantial amount of muscle may find the outcome deceptive (such as the elderly).

Please use one of our more specialized calculators if you are unclear whether you fall within the “normal” range of muscle mass. Our body fat calculator may help you determine your body fat percentage, while our lean body mass calculator can tell you how much you’d weigh if you weren’t fat.

BMI ranges

There are five basic ranges within the BMI scale:

  • Underweight = less than 18.5
  • Normal weight = 18.5 – 24.9
  • Overweight = 25 – 29.9
  • Obesity = 30 – 35
  • Severe obesity = 35 and more

The BMI Prime is a clever upgrade to our BMI calculator. It’s a decimal value with the highest limit of the “normal BMI” range being 1.0. It’s a simple approach to determine whether or not you’re overweight. If your BMI Prime is greater than 1, you need to reduce weight.

Using our body mass index calculator

You may enter your height and weight in the boxes at the top of our BMI calculator. Plugin these numbers, and you’ll get your BMI, BMI Prime (see above), and a note indicating which bracket you fall into.

You may also do this if you’re overweight and want to know how much weight you’ll need to drop to be into a healthy weight range. Fill in the blanks with your height and weight, then write “0.9” in the BMI Prime box. Your weight and BMI will naturally change.

You’ll need to lock your height box if it adjusts itself when you modify other boxes. Select the lock symbol from the box’s right-hand panel.

Other considerations

Try our basal metabolic rate calculator to see if your metabolism is on your side in your quest for a healthy weight (or its variation with the Harris-Benedict formula). We frequently hear about items that might speed up or slow down our metabolism (which one does missing breakfast do?). However, we don’t hear much about how to keep track of such changes. That is the purpose of this calculator.

When you get up in the morning, your basal metabolic rate is the degree of activity in your body’s metabolism. Because the day hasn’t had time to warm you up yet, this is the most dependable time of day to assess metabolism.

The next obvious figure to know is your optimum weight once you’ve figured out how to calculate BMI.
