How Does Systemic Racism Affect Mental Health?
Systemic Racism Takes a Toll on BIPOC Mental Health
The societal structures, policies, and institutions that oppress people of color are referred to as systemic racism. Systemic racism in the United States predates the country’s formation in 1776 and is also known as structural or institutional racism.
Systemic racism was at work when European colonists came into what is now the United States, asserted control of Native American lands, and enslaved African Americans for years.
BIPOC are still impacted by laws enacted by colonial colonizers decades ago. Systemic racism not only disadvantages marginalized populations economically but also has a negative impact on their mental health.
Policies established the groundwork for the disastrous consequences that we are now witnessing. There was never any genuine atonement, and as a result, many present occurrences are modern reenactments of historical events.
