Waist to Hip Ratio Calculator
The Waist to Hip Ratio Calculator calculates the dimensionless ratio of the waist circumference to the hip circumference. If you’re unsure what to make of your waist-hip ratio or how to accurately measure your waist and hips, keep reading!
Why is waist-hip ratio important?
In general, the waist-hip ratio is a predictor or measure of health and the likelihood of acquiring major health disorders like diabetes, asthma, or Alzheimer’s disease. People with “apple-shaped” bodies (those who carry more weight around the waist) have higher health risks than those with “pear-shaped” bodies (those who carry more weight around the hips), according to research. Use our body shape calculator to determine your body type.
Obesity is measured using the waist-hip ratio. According to the World Health Organization, abdominal obesity is defined as a waist-hip ratio of more than 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women, or a body mass index (BMI) of more than 30.
How to measure waist and hips?
It’s a lot more difficult than you may expect. We recommend the following two options:
The waist circumference should be measured with a stretchy tape at the halfway between the last palpable rib and the top of the iliac crest, according to the WHO’s data collection standard. With the tape parallel to the floor, measure the circumference of your hips around the broadest part of your buttocks.
In practice, the measures are taken at the natural waist’s lowest circumference, generally just above the belly button, and the broadest area of the buttocks or hip.
What does waist to hip ratio calculator do?
The waist-hip ratio is calculated as waist measurement divided by hip measurement W ÷ H
.
For example, a person with a 28 in (71 cm) waist and 35 in (89 cm) hips has a waist-hip ratio of 0.8
