Army Body Fat Calculator
There are a few methods for estimating a person’s fat level, and one of them is a system created by the US Army that assesses body fat with great accuracy. Because all US Army service personnel are obliged to achieve army percentage body fat (percent BF) criteria as a condition of military duty, this metric is approximated for all of them.
Calculate your body fat percentage and scroll down to see whether you qualify for military service. The algorithm used by the US Army body fat calculator differs from the approach used by our US Navy body fat calculator and body fat calculator, so you should check them out as well.
What are the necessary measurements?
The tape should be constructed of a non-stretchable material, preferably fiberglass, according to US Army Regulation 600-9. Ensure that all circumference measurements are done horizontally:
- Height – make sure you don’t wear shoes and stand up straight.
- Neck – measure its circumference below the larynx (Adam’s apple).
- Waist – measure it at the at the navel level for men, and around the narrowest part of the abdomen for women.
- Hips – this measurement is needed for females only and should be taken at the widest part of the buttocks or hip.
The values can be entered in both metric and imperial units. You may use these measures to determine your body shape after you’ve taken them.
What formula does the American Army body fat calculator use?
Army Regulation 600-9 – The Army Body Composition Program explains the equation.
For guys, it looks like this:
%BF = (86.010 * log10( waist – neck ) ) – [70.041 * log10(height)) + 36.76
And like this for women:
%BF = (163.205 * log10( waist + hip – neck ) ) – (97.684 * log10(height)) – 78.387
Please keep in mind that the calculations shown above are for values in imperial units only.
