How to Make Your Future Habits Easy

Habits are the things you do on a daily basis and the minor decisions you make. According to a Duke University research, our habits are responsible for 40% of our day-to-day behaviors. People are more prone to act in accordance with their habits, even if they are unaware of it at times. Habits mostly determine who you are and how you feel. You might be content, dissatisfied, successful, or unsuccessful. No of what scenario you’re in, your behaviors will most likely lead to whatever it is you want.

Resetting your room

A point uncovered from an Oswald Nuckols story on making future habits easier is resetting the room. What would happen if we put the tools or anything we used in the appropriate location when we finished something? That would make it easier for us to repeat the process the following time because everything we utilized is in the same location as we planned. It drastically minimizes the amount of time we spend doing the action. Similarly, resetting the room/environment facilitates future practices.

The Power of Priming the Environment

When you prepare an area for its intended use, you’re priming it to make the following step simple. This is one of the most effective and straightforward methods for changing your habits.

My wife, for example, keeps a box of greeting cards organized by occasion—birthdays, condolences, weddings, graduations, and so on. She selects an appropriate card and sends it off as needed. Because she has decreased the friction of sending cards, she is exceptionally good at remembering to do so.

I used to be the polar opposite. “I should send a card,” I’d think when someone had a kid. However, weeks would pass before I thought to pick one up at the store, and it would be too late.

There are several methods for priming your surroundings so that it is ready to use right away. Place the pan on the burner, the cooking spray on the counter, and any dishes and utensils you’ll need the night before if you want to make a nutritious breakfast. Breakfast will be simple to prepare when you wake up.

How do we manage habits?

There are both good and harmful habits in people. To be productive, we must avoid harmful habits as much as possible and cultivate positive ones. The friction of doing an activity influences the likelihood of executing it. You will not do it if the friction is high. When the friction is low, you will be able to perform it without exerting any effort. We may simply steer our future activities by regulating the friction of accomplishing something.

For example, if you want to get at work on time, organize your suit and store it in a certain location. Brushing your shoes at night will save you time in the morning. This lowers friction and allows you to behave in a predictable manner. Let’s look at another scenario. Consider spending more time reading books to broaden your horizons. The simplest method to make it a habit is to have a book with you wherever you spend the majority of your time. Maintaining a tidy and well-organized book shelf is also a good idea. Similarly, eliminating friction or inconveniences makes them become habits.

The Path of Most Resistance

If you find yourself watching too much television, disconnect it after each viewing session. Only reconnect it if you can state the name of the show you wish to watch out loud. (Which means you won’t be able to “simply find something” to watch on Netflix.) This arrangement generates just enough friction to keep you from watching mindlessly.

You can take it a step farther if that doesn’t work. After each usage, unplug the television and remove the batteries from the remote, so it takes an extra 10 seconds to switch it back on. Move the television out of the living room and into a closet after each use if you’re extremely strict.

I try to keep my phone in a different room till lunchtime. When it’s right next to me, I’ll check it for no reason at all all morning. When it’s in another room, though, I don’t worry about it nearly as much. And the friction is high enough that I won’t go grab it until there’s a compelling reason to do so. As a result, I receive three to four hours of uninterrupted work time each morning.

Tell a friend or family member to conceal your phone from you for a few hours if keeping it in another room isn’t enough. Request that a coworker hold it at their desk in the morning and return it to you at lunchtime.

It’s amazing how little friction is necessary to keep unpleasant conduct at bay. I drink less beer when I conceal it at the back of the fridge where I can’t see it. It might take weeks for me to download and get back into social media applications after I erase them off my phone.

These techniques are unlikely to stop a real addiction, but for many of us, a little friction might be the difference between adhering to a healthy habit and falling into a poor one. Consider the impact of making hundreds of these adjustments and living in an atmosphere that encourages good conduct while making bad behavior more difficult.

Where to Go From Here

Whether we’re pursuing behavior change as an individual, a parent, a coach, or a leader, we should ask ourselves, “How can we construct a situation where doing the right thing is easy?” Reconfigure your rooms such that the most important tasks are also the simplest to complete.

Habits of execution become second nature once you’ve mastered habits of preparation.
